Lady Lazarus is comin' home
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Thursday, March 31, 2011
Bay Area native and Savannah, GA resident Lady Lazarus is coming home for a pair of shows this weekend in support of her debut album, Mantic.
The songs crafted by Lady Lazarus, a.k.a. Melissa Ann Sweat, usually consist of vocals, a single instrument, plenty of tape hiss, and a generally moody ambiance. And yes, I mean to imply that the tape hiss and the ambiance are practically instruments being manipulated by Sweat in order to achiever her sound. There's an austerity, an extreme minimalism, to the songs that gives them such an air of authenticity that they become much more than the sum of their parts. ...

Our SXSW show rocked!
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Monday, March 28, 2011
Our show at the Liberty in Austin, TX on March 17th, 2011 was an amazing night all around. The bands were incredible, the bar and its staff were incredible, the crowd was incredible... The whole night could not have gone better, and Olivia and I were thrilled with how it all went down.
...
Thanks to everyone who was involved. Extra special thanks to the bands: You guys were all amazing and we feel very blessed to have had you all play.

New Fist Fam record, "Posted," drops soon. Catch em live at Wiretap's SXSW show!
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Saturday, March 12, 2011
I really dig the Fist Fam. They're a rowdy crew of rappers transplanted from Asheville, NC. There's like eight of them or something, and they all got mad skills. The beats are fresh, the flows are tight, and when you see them all on stage it's like they're having their own little party up there.
They're releasing their new album, Posted, on April 1st. It's streaming over at the Fist Fam Bandcamp if you wanna check it out before plunking down your cash — because believe me, after you hear it, you'll be plunking down your cash. ...

- Author: Mike G

I mean, who wouldn't, right? A noise rock dance party sounds awesome.
Well, you're in luck: Beloved San Francisco-based instrumental rockers/party-starters Microfiche are looking for a new keyboardist/synth player, and it could be you. Check out their Craigslist ad:

Helene Renaut - "The Deer Convention" release party tonight!
- Author: None
- Published: Wednesday, March 09, 2011
One listen to the track in the video below — "Bumblebee" —and there's no mistaking the influence of French pop on Hélène Renaut's music. That's no mere stylistic choice on Renaut's part, however: the folk pop chanteuse was born in France, though she calls San Francisco home now. Her new album, "The Deer Convention," is now available on limited edition vinyl and non-limited edition digital. Order either (or both) on Hélène Renaut's Bandcamp. ...

LL: I wanted, above anything really, for the album to sound human and spirited. I wanted intimacy, warmth, lo-fidelity, reverberation, and I wanted some of the songs to really dazzle and shine. To jangle, I suppose. There's a bit of a bell-like quality to my keyboard. It can sound a little heraldic. Still, I didn't want to over-embellish anything. At first I was thinking of having horns, some guitar, but decided against it. Having a minimalist quality to the songs just felt right — there was a protective quality to our recording process.

Of course you can also catch them for FREE if you are lucky enough to be in Austin during the

Renaut has a big release party tonight at Cafe Du Nord with co-headliner Emily Jane White, who's making her first Stateside appearance in nearly a year. Opener is local "finger-picking maniac" Ed Masuga.
WTM: Where was the album recorded? I see you worked with a lot of impressive collaborators, how was that whole process? What was the best part about recording the album?
