Schande has no idea what's on the horizon - and that's pretty badass
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Thursday, September 22, 2011
Wiretap has had an ongoing love affair with Schande for years now. We just love them to pieces, and not only because when I asked them to send me a band photo to accompany this interview, they sent back the awkward family photo I photoshopped all their heads onto for the release of our Wiretap covers compilation oh so long ago.
My buddy told me the other day that he thinks Jen Chochinov, singer/guitarist, is totally hung up on the 90s. And he was right. She is — in the best possible way. ...

Cannons and Clouds release new album, play Rock Make this Saturday
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Wednesday, September 14, 2011
Cannons & Clouds started as a folky duo, but is now a six-piece making music that has grown in many ways, both figurative and literal. Three- to six-part harmonies and a full-time harpist take the balladeering of singer-guitarist Zachary Blizzard into musical terrain far more lush and symphonic than your average indie folk band.
Cannons & Clouds has just released June, its second album. Come on out to the Rock Make Street Festival this Saturday for your chance to catch some of the new tunes live. ...

Rock Make is going to be awesome. If you volunteer, it could be even awesomer!
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Friday, September 09, 2011
The fourth annual Rock Make Street Festival is coming up next Saturday, September 17th! Put on by the fine folks of TheBayBridged.com, Tartufi, and Cookie the Dude, it's a whole day of fun in the sun (seriously! it's in the Mission!) for the whole family -- especially if that family has lots of live music-lovers in it. So many of our local favorites are playing it's ridiculous: Tartufi, Battlehooch, Phantom Kicks, James & Evander, Birds & Batteries, and more. (Full disclosure: My band Mist Giant is also playing the fest this year. But that has nothing to do with how excited I am about the lineup! Well, okay, a little.) ...

You are totally missing out if you don't go see You Are Plural tonight
- Author: Mike G
- Published: Thursday, September 01, 2011
You Are Plural is new on the scene, and I'm beyond stoked to see the band live for the first time tonight at the release party for its new EP, No More.
The duo's music is primarily built around Ephriam Nagler's Wurlitzer piano and Jen Grady's cello, with plenty of vocal melodies contributed by both. The arrangements are minimal but lush at the same time, or at alternating times, as the pacing and arrangement of a song may dictate. The music has an earthy, organic feel akin to folk music, but I hate to really even plant that seed in your brain because I don't think this is folk music. It's intriguing, beautiful, and many other things, but not easily categorizable. ...

Schande's music is composed of everything good about 90s indie punk/rock. More straightforward rockers like Sleater-Kinney and The Archers of Loaf have an influence on the band, no doubt. But over the past few years, I've been stoked to hear more noise rock creeping into Schande's music, bringing elements of bands like Sonic Youth and the Melvins into their sound.
WTM: Is this prelude to a forthcoming Schande long player? (If not, can it be? Pretty please?)
I had a chat with Zachary Blizzard about the new album and its plans for the future. Check it out:
ZB: I would say our city is extremely influential to our sound, songs, and mood. It's a major part of my lyrical writings having family roots and experiences here since early childhood. Along with other members being Bay Area natives, we naturally create a sound that paints a picture of our home. Along with historically and regionally significant musical artists that most of us grew up listening to.

I have to say, though, that I'd watch Grady play cello in just about any kind of band. Her gorgeous, haunting voice and cello first captivated me years ago when she was playing in a band called
WTM: Where was it recorded?
